The Power of Making a Decision . . .

May 6th, 2010 Madeleine Kay No comments

In my last blog, I spoke about making a decision to be fit and healthy this spring (or successful, happy, rich . . . or whatever you decide you want to do, be or have).

And – I explained what making a decision means . . . because I don’t think most people really know or are willing to accept and admit what it means to make a decision.

It’s so important . . . that I just want to reiterate – making a decision means eliminating “if” and replacing it with “when.” It’s that simple!

And because it’s so simple . . . so laser-like and focused – it is very powerful . . . and therefore . . . terrifying to most of us.

So – we complicate things. Why? To engage our minds. To distract us. To occupy our time and energy. To give us excuses and reasons for not doing, being or having what we want.

But if it’s simple – then we have no excuses. If it’s simple, then we must “decide”; otherwise, we feel like a fraud or a failure. So – to avoid the responsibility of actually doing what we say we are going to . . . the responsibility of deciding, (not wishing, hoping, praying or trying) – we just never really make the decision.

What we don’t realize however, is that not making a decision, is a decision – a decision not to decide! . . . And by doing that, we trap ourselves in the low, ineffective energy of trying – and never really succeed because trying has no energy, no passion, no urgency, no commitment to it . . . and we console ourselves with “Oh well, at least I tried”.

But trying is not good enough. Not for things you really care about. Trying is only for experimenting and exploring . . . To get results, you need to make a decision . . . You need to change “if” to “when”.

So Do it . . . Do it now! Do you want to be healthy? Do you want to be thin? Do you want to be happy . . . in a wonderful relationship . . . successful . . . rich? Whatever you really want . . . and mean to do, be or have . . . make a decision today and just do it.

Rabbi Hillel said, “If not now, when?” So do it . . . Do it now!

GOLD MEDAL MIND … The Real Lesson of the Olympics

February 19th, 2010 Madeleine Kay No comments

It’s not what you might think . . . at all!

As I listen . . . really listen, perhaps for the first time . . . to the interviews with the Olympic athletes, I begin to understand what the Olympics are really about.  I begin to understand much about life and sports that I don’t think I fully “got” before.

I always thought of competition as a pitting of one person against another – a negative activity that creates a divisiveness that I never cared much for or about.

This year’s Olympics however, have made me realize that is not at all what competition is . . . at least not the true competitive spirit of the original Greeks and of these international games.

As I listen to the interviews, it becomes apparent to me that the real meaning of competition is not a contest against others at all . . . It’s not divisive.  Rather, it is a striving for excellence – to do and be your personal best.  So the real competition is with yourself . . . to always excel and to do your best.

Yes, I have heard that over and over before, just as I’m sure many of you have heard it repeatedly, but somehow, it never really sunk in before.  Perhaps I wasn’t ready for it to sink in.

But now it has and the competitive spirit for me is now something admirable, desirable, and a sure and joyful path to success, which becomes the striving for excellence . . . the commitment to being your personal best.

When you are in a competition such as the Olympics, if you focus only on competing against others and winning, it becomes you against everyone else, and then you miss out on the richness of the games and the whole experience – the camaraderie and the opportunity to grow and expand.

If you realize that the root of the word competition has to do with competence – the act of becoming and helping others to be more proficient, excellent and competent than ever before . . . then you will understand why competition is so invigorating and healthy and why it builds such strong character.  It’s not the winning that builds one’s character . . .  it’s the spirit of true competition that does.
